Common Sense Home Renovation
In 1985 I went into my local bookstore looking for THE book that would help me gut and renovate a 1900's vintage frame two flat and turn it into a high end single family dwelling. My background was a solid "do-it-yourselfer" combined with some woodworking. I found "Home Renovation" invaluable. Good basic information, no Bob Vila, just a few concise paragraphs and some well drawn sketches to give me the information I was looking for on virtually any topic.

During my project two well intentioned friends gave me books which sit on my shelf gathering dust. "Home Renovation" resides right next to them, a dirty, broken, paperback that I constantly return to for information.

My only criticisim is the index, which is limited. But if you are planning a renovation project, this is a great resource.

Home-Making

Poetry meets practicality
This book is a gem.

Written in the 1880's, this book illumines the poetic life of the family.

Would it be controversial, if published now? Absolutely. It devalues autonomy, assumes the existence of absolutes, and certainly leads the reader to think that real poetry in life is found through surrendering autonomy and embracing your husband, wife, children, brother, sister.

It's classic romance, but without fluff. The level of prose transcends anything published these days -- be ready to enjoy the english language at its finest.

And be ready for a truly refreshing introduction to life as we should know it. Less harried, less materialistic, less self-introspective, and more appreciative of the things that give life meaning -- the people directly around us.

This book teaches brothers how to care for sisters, and vice-versa. It teaches wives how to help their husbands become their best, and how men can bring out every facet of their wives' beauty. It even gives parents perspective in dealing with the loss of a child. This is not pop-psychology.

This is wisdom.

For anyone seeking to deal with unexpected tragedy
Hope Grows In Winter: Inspiring Real-life Stories Of How Hope Changes Lives deals with the issues of suffering and grief that are the inevitable experience of all men and women. Each of the contributors has endured a personal tragedy: a pastor diagnosed with full-blown AIDS, a young mother discovering she has breast cancer; an upstanding Christian father learning that his unmarried adolescent daughter is pregnant, another father who suddenly lost his beloved four year old son. Yet in spite of the their pain and hopeless feelings, each of these men and women reached the same conclusion -- hope does indeed grow in winter. This wonderful compendium of inspiration from a Christian perspective is highly recommended reading for anyone seeking to deal with unexpected tragedy in their lives or the lives of their loved ones.

The Horror Spoofs of Abbott and Costello: A Critical Assessment of the Comedy Team's Monster Films

Abbott and Costello Meet the Who's Who of Horror
This is a great book that goes into the plot of their various A&C meet...(fill in the blank)films as well as "Hold That Ghost" and "The Time of Their Lives". There is even a brief section on their quasi sci-fi films. Each major "horror/comedy" film is detailed and behind the scenes info is given. Actor/actress backgrounds as well as changes in scripts and plots are also added for a totally enjoyable book. A section supplying background info on Abbott & Costello is given in the introductory chapter, and then it is on to my all time favorite "Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein". A must for all A&C fans!

Horsedrawn Plows and Plowing
Published in Paperback by Small Farmer's Journal (January, 1901)
Author: L. R. Miller

Yet another great book from Lynn Miller
This is a fantastic book from a series of fantastic books by the author. It will never be a bestseller simply because the information it contains is uninteresting to most people but if you want to learn to plow with horses or oxen, this is the only resource there is. This book covers every aspect of plowing, including the appropriate timing of tillage. It also discusses the numerous different types of walking and riding plows and gives instructions for the proper use and maintenance for each major type. There were far to many different plow companies to even mention all of them but Horsedrawn Plows and Plowing mentions all the most common with many fascinating reprinted images from old catalogs and manuals. This is a great book for anyone interested in animal traction, antique farm equipment or agricultural history

Great Story about a Flood
I read this book for one of my classes at school. I really enjoyed reading the book, because the area I live in has floods at least once a year. After I read the book to my students, it really hit home to them. Most of them has gone through what the girl and her mother has gone through.

Fascinating reading!
This is more of a supernatural thriller than a si-fi type book...one of the few that I have read by Ms. Norton (&Miller). The story of Susan and Kuydall house is a nifty tale and well worth the read if you can find it. A novel addition to any Norton collection!

How Does a Poem Mean?
Published in Paperback by Houghton Mifflin College (September, 1975)
Authors: John Ciardi and Miller Williams

40 Years of Reference
This book was a text book for me as I wandered, wonderingly, into the world of freshman college English Lit. in 1960. It has made th cut on all of the 27 "moves to new digs" that I have made since then. It is now like an old friend--treasured, respected, loved. I am sorry it is out of print because my copy is held together with tape and cannot last too much longer. It is written with such an obvious love for the subject matter (the poem) that one is caught up in that love and swept along with it. Yet, the writing is simple, clear, and constructive. It is an introduction to poetry for an adult of any age. For me, it was, and is--priceless.

How Like an Angel (Ipl Library of Crime Classics)

Authors: Margaret Millar and Margaret Miller

As good as Chandler and Hammett
Be prepared to be fooled in an astonishing ending. I had to read the last paragraph three times. All the clues were there, but you are led down a variety of blind alleys each of which takes you farther from the eventual obvious truth. This book, based in California like Chandler, Hammett and Ross MacDonald, reminds one of what mystery writing ought to achieve and rarely does.
